Manchester United got a significant acquisition in the January transfer window in signing Bruno Fernandes away from Sporting CP. The club announced last January 30th.
Fernandes signed a five-and-a-half year contract with Manchester United and the Premier League club paid Sporting CP a transfer fee worth 47 million British Pound or 62 million US Dollars to acquire the services of the 25-year old midfielder.
“For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible,” said Fernandes via BBC Sport as the Portuguese followed the footsteps of fellow compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Marcos Rojo in joining Manchester United from Sporting CP.
“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club,” he disclosed.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to BBC Sport article that Fernandes is a ‘’fantastic addition’’ to the squad.
“Bruno’s goals and assists stats speak for themselves. He will be a fantastic addition to our team and he will help us push on in the second part of the season,’’ Solskjaer quoted in the BBC Sport article
“We have been tracking Bruno for many months and everyone here has been tremendously impressed with all his attributes and what he will bring to this team.’’
“Most importantly, he is a terrific human being with a great personality and his leadership qualities are clear for all to see,” the Norwegian coach observed.
Fernandes scored 64 goals in 137 appearances for the tournaments participated by Sporting CP after joining the club in 2017 from Italian club Sampdoria. He was part of Sporting’s back-to-back Portuguese League Cup titles in 2018 and 2019 and 2019 Cup of Portugal championship team.
He was also part of the Portugal football team that won the inaugural UEFA Nations League title last year with Ronaldo as one of his teammates.
“I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.’’
“I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team,” Fernandes further added.
Fernandes already made his debut for Manchester United against Wolverhampton last February 1st, but the match ended in a goalless draw.
Manchester United is currently sixth in the Premier League table with 36 points.
Inter Miami appoints Diego Alonso as the inaugural coach
Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team Inter Miami which retired football star David Beckham was part of the ownership appointed former Uruguay football team standout Diego Alonso as the first-ever head coach of the club.
Alonso will guide Inter Miami maiden MLS campaign, starting in March, bringing his coaching experience from Mexico after leading Pachuca and Monterrey to CONCACAF Champions League conquest in 2017 and 2019 respectively and guided Pachuca for the FIFA Club World Cup third place finish in 2017.
“He understands this region, he understands the type of players we’re going to have and he’s been successful everywhere he’s been,” said Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough via The Miami Herald on Alonso. “He had coached at two big clubs in Pachuca and Monterrey. He has very clear ideas in what he expects from players and how he expects them to work and carry themselves. I think he’s a really, really good guy. He’s someone I can work really well with.”
“He has competed against MLS teams in the CONCACAF Champions League, and I paid close attention when his team was beating Atlanta United,” McDonough added with Alonso familiarity with MLS clubs lead him to hire the 44- year old . “All the MLS teams aspire to win that, and we just signed a guy who has won it twice with two different clubs.”
Inter Miami coaching search was closely followed especially Beckham was part of the ownership group and several high-profile names was linked to the job which include former Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari and Carlo Ancelotti, who was recently named as the new manager of Everton after Napoli fired him as their coach.
The Miami-based club is one of the two expansion teams for the 2020 MLS season together with Nashville SC.Inter Miami home pitch will be the Lockhart Stadium located in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida while their permanent home pitch, Miami Freedom Park in Miami is still under construction and expected to be finished in 2022.
Inter Miami will begin their MLS campaign on the road against DC United on March 7th at the Audi Field in Washington DC and made their home debut against the Los Angeles Galaxy at Lockhart Stadium on March 14th.
