Despite a rocky off-season which saw two teams departing, the 2018 Philippine Football League(PFL 2018) pushes through with a weekend offering.

JPV Marikina debuts in home court with style

First in the offering was the clash between JPV-Marikina and Global-Cebu FC in which JPV won with a score of 2-1 at the Marikina Sports Complex last March 3rd.

Playing for the first time in front of the home crowd, which was not made possible last year due to problems on their pitch that doesn’t fell in league standards, JPV Marikina was on fire in defeating their opponent.

New recruits Kiego Moriyasu and Ryoki Kozawa led the way for JPV-Marikina. Moriyasu put JPV on board with his own goal at the 13th minute while Kozawa followed with his own on the 75th minute for a 2-0 lead of JPV-Marikina against Global-Cebu.

A late free-kick by Dominic del Rosario put Global-Cebu on board at the 89th minute but, it was too late for the Cebu-based team to come back and save the match.

Davao Aguilas and Kaya Iloilo FC tangled in a 2-2 draw on another weekend offering at Davao del Norte Sports Complex, Tagum City last March 4th.

Kaya FC first controlled the tempo of the match as Ghanian defender, Alfred Osei had put Kaya on board in the 18th minute to give the Iloilo-based squad a 1-0 halftime lead.

To make matters worse for Davao Agilas in the second half after San Beda standout, Connor Tacagni nailed his own goal at the 49th minute to give Kaya a 2-0 advantage.

Later on, James Younghusband somehow saved the Davao Aguilas from home crowd embarrassment in nailing two goals in short period of time during the 51st and 58th minutes, in which both teams were tangled in a chess match to end the game into a 2-2 draw.

“Exciting game, I think it was a good result, a good start, not only for Davao but for both teams. Unfortunately, in the second half, I think we deserved the third goal but Kaya was able to defend on that when we do our substitution to adjust the games. In the end, I think, good start for us,” said Davao head coach Marlon Maro via Tiebreaker Times.

The team has the talent. One important thing is I see the true character of my players. From 0-2 we were able to equalize in the second half. It’s a good sign to progress in our next matches,” Maro added.

JPV Marikina beats debuting Stallion to have PFL 2018 lead

Meanwhile, JPV Marikina continued its impressive start into the new PFL 2018 season in defeating Stallion Laguna, with a score of 2-1 at the Biñan Sports Complex in Biñan, Laguna last March 11th.

JPV Marikina got itself on board in the 8th minute, thanks to the miscommunication on the defenders of Stallion Laguna and their goalkeeper Hayeson Pepito, that led to the goal of  Kyungjoon Ko.

Stallion Laguna tied the score at 1-all after Yannick Tuason nailed a goal in the 44th minute.

With the game on the line, substitute Aaron Alcitche, who came in the 83rd minute to replace Kennedy Uzuka, put the fortune of his team on his own hands with a goal in the last minutes of the game to give JPV Marikina its second win.

JPV Marikina is now on top of the PFL table with six points. Davao Aguilas and Kaya Iloilo had one score each, while Global-Cebu and Stallion still had no points after a game.

The PFL continued at April 4 with defending PFL champion Ceres-Negro made their debut against Kaya Iloilo while Global-Cebu FC square off against Stallion Laguna.
